Women Who Have Guided Us On Our Path
Gertrude Bell 1868-1926
Not your ordinary Victorian woman! Gertrude was a mountaineer, archeologist, diplomat of the Middle East and the first woman to graduate in Modern History from Oxford. A true adventurer and risk taker, she spoke Arabic, Persian, French, German and explored much of the Middle East, becoming a mediator between the British and the Arabs and was a key figure in the shaping of Iraq. Never married, her personal life was fraught with failed relationships. Gertrude died at the age of 57 from an overdose of sleeping pills in Bagdad.
